1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using the MapPoster website and application, the MapPoster API or the MapPoster connector for Claude ("Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you disagree with any part of the terms, then you may not access the Service.
2. Map Data, Themes and Credits
Posters are drawn from OpenStreetMap data, which is available under the Open Database License. The map itself comes from a different source depending on the theme, and each source's licence decides what you may do with a poster:
- Artistic themes (every theme except Classic Street and Satellite View, including the city maps Midnight Dark, Minimal White and Modern Voyager): vector map tiles from OpenFreeMap, built on the OpenMapTiles schema and styled by MapPoster. Credit: "© OpenMapTiles © OpenStreetMap contributors · openstreetmap.org/copyright".
- Classic Street: map tiles from the OpenStreetMap Foundation. Credit: "© OpenStreetMap contributors".
- Satellite View: imagery from Esri and its partners. Credit: "Powered by Esri · Esri, Vantor, Earthstar Geographics".
Every poster carries the required credit in its bottom-right corner. Keep it there. When you sell posters or products that show them, also put the credit, including the address openstreetmap.org/copyright, in the product listing and on any packaging. If a product cannot show the credit legibly, the listing and packaging are enough.
We do not guarantee the geographical accuracy of the generated maps.
3. Using Your Posters
3.1 Free downloads
Free downloads (watermarked) are for personal, non-commercial use only.
3.2 Premium downloads and Single Render credits
Premium downloads (unwatermarked, high resolution) and posters rendered with a Single Render credit may be used personally and, when made with an artistic theme, for limited commercial purposes: for example decorating your business premises, a gift to a client or employee, or illustrating a single post or article. Selling the poster, or products that show it, requires the Commercial Use Licence in section 3.3.
3.3 Commercial Use Licence for API subscribers
While you have an active Starter, Pro or Business subscription to the MapPoster API, every poster you render through the API with an artistic theme comes with a commercial use licence. This includes posters rendered through the MapPoster connector for Claude with your API key.
Under this licence you may:
- print the poster and sell it, framed or unframed, and sell other physical products that show it, such as canvases, cards, apparel and mugs;
- use it in your own or your clients' marketing, websites, social media, presentations and printed materials;
- create posters on behalf of your customers or clients.
The licence is worldwide, non-exclusive and non-transferable. It does not allow you to:
- sell, license or give away the poster files themselves, or templates made from them, as digital products such as downloads, stock images or NFTs;
- offer poster generation to others as a service, app or API;
- register a poster design as a trademark or claim exclusive rights in it. The underlying map data is open, so others can make similar maps.
Posters in use stay licensed. A poster you rendered while your subscription was active, and put to commercial use before it ended, keeps its licence after the subscription ends, for as long as you use it. Putting a poster to commercial use means offering it for sale (for example in a shop or print-on-demand listing), selling it, delivering it to a client or publishing it in marketing. You may keep those listings and campaigns running, keep printing and selling new copies, and resize, crop or convert the poster to another file format or show it in product mockups. Your clients may keep using the posters you delivered to them, for the purpose you made them for.
What ends with the subscription. Your subscription ends when your cancellation takes effect, when it lapses because a payment could not be collected, or when we end it for a breach of these Terms. From then on you can no longer render posters with a commercial use licence. Posters you rendered but had not put to commercial use by then, and new posters made by changing the place, map area, theme or text of a licensed one, may only be used as described in section 3.2. If you subscribe again, posters you render from then on are licensed again.
When a licence can be withdrawn. We withdraw the licence of a poster only if the payment for the period in which you rendered it is reversed or refunded, for example through a chargeback, or if you seriously breach these Terms with that poster, for example by selling the file itself. We will first tell you in writing and, where it can be put right, give you 14 days to do so. Copies already sold stay with their buyers, and your personal use is never affected.
Proof of licence. Every API render carries a signed provenance record (render ID, plan and date) in the file's metadata and in the API response. Keep it with your records, together with when you first listed, sold or delivered the poster; we can confirm through the API that a file was issued by MapPoster.
3.4 Map-tile styles
Posters made with the map-tile styles Classic Street and Satellite View are for personal use only, whichever plan or download you bought. Their tile providers do not permit commercial reuse of static map images, so we cannot license them for it. The same applies to posters made with the earlier versions of Midnight Dark, Minimal White and Modern Voyager, which used map tiles from CARTO; posters made with their current versions are artistic themes.
4. MapPoster API, and MapPoster in Claude and ChatGPT
- Your API key belongs to your account. Keep it secret: you are responsible for all usage under it. If it leaks, rotate it from the developer page.
- Each plan includes the number of renders per calendar month shown on the developer page. Unused renders do not carry over.
- The MapPoster apps for Claude and ChatGPT let you design posters in a conversation. Their design tools and poster previews are free to use. Downloads happen on mapposter.xyz under these Terms; in Claude, rendering through the connector uses your API plan.
- We may suspend a key that is used in breach of these Terms or that puts an unreasonable load on the Service.
