Johannesburg City Map Poster
Johannesburg possesses an incredibly rare geography for a mega-city: it is built on absolutely no major river, lake, or coastline. Instead, it was violently born entirely out of the Witwatersrand, a massive, rocky ridge that held the greatest gold rush in human history. The map is a sprawling, endless, highly unequal grid violently scarred by massive, bright yellow artificial mountains of mining waste (mine dumps).

Johannesburg from above
A custom map poster of Johannesburg, South Africa turns a meaningful location into personalized wall art — completely free with MapPoster.
The city's brutal history is clearly etched into the spatial separation of its massive, sprawling townships and the hyper-dense, forested northern suburbs, which famously form the largest man-made urban forest on Earth. Deep, rich gold tones, stark, gritty industrial greys, or profound African earth-tones perfectly command respect for the relentless, tough, and wildly vibrant 'City of Gold'.
